Quilting with flowers

We usually don't post about funerals, but this was was really neat, and we thought it turned out really well.  The deceased was an avid quilter and so her family asked that we use patches of flowers in the funeral pieces that would resemble quilt squares.

Here's how they turned out:

Chocolate!

We just replenished our supply of German chocolate--Ritter, Kinder and Milka--and we're trying out a few new flavors.

We all just split a Waldbeer Joghurt (forest berry yogurt) bar and loved it. In addition to all of our usual candy bars, we also have a new Karamell Nuss flavor, Ritter's chocolate bar of the year, and Kinder Delice.

So come by to try them out and let us know what you think!

Macie Redd

Macie started working for us last November. We could tell from the moment she stepped into the shop that she was just the right mix of practical, chipper, and eccentric to fit in at the Flower Basket Boutique. She is a Provo girl, and started out her floral design career at Every Blooming Thing in Salt Lake. Her specialty has been tall, majestic arrangements with curly willow and a host of other unusual elements that make every piece she does totally original, sometimes almost avant garde, and always perfectly suited to the occasion and the recipient. Because of her great eye for color and her ability to make each piece totally unique, she is great to work with on arrangements for very special occasions, and especially, being a new bride herself, on weddings.

Her creativity does not stop with flowers, though. In addition to doing floral design and displays for the Flower Basket, she also has her own line of jewelry--Phyllis and Larue.  Named after and inspired by her grandmothers, the pieces include vintage stones and chains, and can be purchased right here at the Flower Basket. Macie and her sister have been making jewelry for about five years and they sure love getting together to design new necklaces, earrings and wrist wraps.  Each piece is a new mix of color, patterns and stones so come in to see what they come up with next!

If you run into Macie at the shop she's sure to pause at whatever project she's working on to give a friendly greeting and a sunny smile. We're so glad we get to work with her, and so lucky to have her with us!

April, May and June Showers...

As much as we love to get rain here in Utah, it can put a major (literal) damper on summer plans.  It's never dark or drizzly here at the Flower Basket, though, so if you find yourself caught in the rain feel free to come on over and hang out.

We just got some new bags and purses in, and a great selection of new summer flowers that we can't wait to use!

Summer Weddings

One of our favorite times of the year here at the Flower Basket Boutique is the summer wedding rush. Every year at about this time as we begin to gear up for the new season and the new batch of beautiful brides, we seek inspiration from wedding blogs (some of our favorites are 100 Layer Cake, Style Me Pretty, and Snippet and Ink), magazines, the colors and beauty that spring up as the season begins and, most importantly, the brides and families who come to us looking for the perfect flowers for their perfect day.

We want tell you about some flowers we did for a very special wedding day we got to be a part of this Spring.

The bride, my niece Katie Candland (now Katie Perez), wanted her arrangements to be as vibrant as the new family she was creating with her husband-to-be, Tony Perez, and his son and daughter. Jared, 17, does graffiti art on a large plywood canvas in his backyard, and Alexa, 14, who is an excellent student going into 9th grade next year, sang an arrangement of “Beautiful Savior” with her new cousins as part of the ceremony.

The ceremony was held in the back yard of Katie’s childhood home in Mesa, AZ. She wanted flowers that would harmonize with the beautiful orange trees and flower beds in the yard, so we used mostly warm, rich colors along with the white stock and the greens. She wanted an eclectic, home-spun feel, as though the flowers were picked straight from the garden. She was inspired by the movie Mamma Mia, with the tropical hues and organic feel.

Katie’s sisters and brother-in-law played in a string quartet for part of the ceremony.

We collected a variety of vintage pots and containers from neighbors and friends. Her father’s Mexican restaurant, Mi Amigo’s catered the reception. By the time everything was set up, with the food, the decorations, the bouquets, the guests and the families, her parent’s back yard was transformed into an oasis of vibrant sounds, smells, and colors in the Arizona desert.

The wedding feast.

We like to get to know the bride and wedding party and are always excited when a bride comes in who wants something different, like my niece Katie. What gets us most excited, whether we’re creating something unique for Robert Redford’s daughter’s wedding or the BYU student on a budget, is when we’ve helped the bride to find the look and the feeling of a wedding uniquely hers.

We welcome you to bring in any special containers or vases that you’d like us to fill for that big day.

So if you’re planning a summer wedding or party we hope you’ll let us be a part of your special day.

Earlier in the evening the dance floor was populated mostly by children but as the night went on the older family members all got up to show off their salsa dancing skills and danced into the wee hours of the morning. What a blast!

Bits from Bonnie

Last Tuesday afternoon a sleepy-looking girl wandered into the
Flower Basket. I first spotted her furry slippers, and then her sweat pants, red nose, and unkempt hair.

She quickly apologized for her appearance and said that she had been sick. She told me that as she lay in her bed she thought that perhaps making a quick trip into the Flower Basket might pick her up. "This is my one and only stop for today," she said, "but I just had to get out of my apartment."

I smiled at her pluck and at her desire to have a change of scenery. It lifted my day knowing that the Flower Basket was at the top of her list and her one stop for the day, so if you're suffering from end-of-the-season blues, spring flu, or spring fever, we'll have candles burning, music playing, and flowers out to cheer you up.
